Experience Is a Capitalist Invention
Say (and VOTE) NO to the Status Cuomo
I just got back from voting — YES on 50 for all my Cali babies — and obviously, vote for Zohran Mamdani for everybody in New York.
It’s been a year and a half since I left New York, and not being able to vote for Zohran is the first thing I’ve been sad about missing. Meanwhile, my friends are like, “Wait—what?” (Jk. They don’t support me. They’ll never see this.)
Anyway. Although I’m not in New York, I have been keeping up with the mayoral race and watching the debates. In the last one, something that really stood out to me was the visual and visible difference between Zohran and Cuomo — just as far as age.
And look, old people are great. Jodwilling, we all get to be one someday. And when we do, may we all be able to retire gracefully — not just in a societal sense, where the world allows us to survive without clocking in somewhere, but also personally: may we have the personal ability to let go of being in control.
In that last debate, Cuomo was harping on Zohran’s age — “He’s young and he has no experience. He’s never worked a job.”
Bitch, you’re old and you have no experience. You’ve worked a lifetime of government jobs, and the government is no better for it.
Which is why I say: Andrew Cuomo has no experience.
“Experience” is a capitalist invention that teaches us to prioritize people who have done things before. And that’s fine — except in way too many cases, when considering the experience a person has, we fail to take into account the experience that they have been - how they were and how it turned out for everyone else.
Andrew Cuomo has been in government for however many hundreds or thousands of years, and this is where we are. And if you like it here — if you believe all is well and as it should be — then stick to what you know: vote No on 50 in California and Yes to Cuomo in New York. Go on and renew your contract for the Status-Cuomo experience.
But then... I don’t know. Maybe sit and think about things. Because damn.
How limited is your worldview that you look around and say, “Yeah — this is great. I can’t imagine anything better.”
