consciously uncoupling art from capitalism

For the final project of my film class at the end of 2025, I produced a Black-led, short film musical. It’s a really good film. (I’m not linking it here simply because my perfectionism makes me insane. Because some tweaks I want to make are forefront of my mind, I think EVERYBODY will only see those things and will hate it, so until I fix them (or my mind), the film is unseeable.)

Anyway...

In the end, it took about 6 hours to shoot with a cast of two and a crew of four. We shot on a Saturday and not one thing -- not the location, not the cast, not the crew -- was what I had originally intended or what I had planned for. Ultimately, every “YES” I had gotten in the beginning turned out to be a placeholder with the original lead actor and original DP both flaking away. Which was fine -- such is life and I am SO GRATEFUL for how their temporary involvement gave me the time and space to keep making plans and moving forward.

I realized SO MANY things working on that project, including my own (current) aesthetic which is grounded whimsy -- (fill in the blanks by using each of the words AVERAGE, EVERYDAY and WHIMSICAL once, in any order.)
